Description
It is summer. Gone is the milk thistle's beautiful crown of pink and purple ray like flowers, Gone is the strikingly patterned green and white foliage,The foliage is dry and brown. The brightly colored flowers have dried and fallen away. What remains is a spiky dry seed head with a tuft of downy seeds, that are ready to leave the nest on the next gust of wind. The Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) has red to purple flowers and shiny pale green leaves with white veins. Originally a native of Southern Europe through to Asia, it is now found throughout the world. The medicinal parts of the plant are the ripe seeds. Digital photograph, minimal processing applied.
